We only find some small comfort in the thought that hopefully most of them died doing what it was they loved seeking out and understanding. But in fact it wasn't they who triggered the supernova and doomed our species it was they who - even if unwittingly - gave us a chance at salvation. I was ready to blame them for everything, thinking they hadn't fully comprehended what they were undertaking, and that when the Sun Station "failed" it was just a delayed response. How they were basically just huge nerds always looking for something new to discover.Īnd that was the saddest part of all, realising that their insatiable curiosity was ultimately their own undoing. How they found love and how they joked with one another. Uncovering their own voyage of discovery, and how they came upon the means of powering their reality-defying project, and how they debated its feasibility and its morality. When we were tiny beings crawling around in the subterranean geyser caves of Timber Hearth, they were a full interstellar Type I Civilisation, on the verge of harnessing energy from the Sun - or rather its demise. The sheer magnitude of everything, particularly involving the Nomai and their thirst for progress, was just mind-melting. I was so happy I'd reached the end, but so sad knowing that this was it for the Hearthians, and that I would probably never get to know their far future descendants, aside from that beautiful image at the end, suggesting simply that life will inevitably find a way. It was like all the pent up stress and emotion from countless cycles - countless lives - came flooding out, with the joy and melancholy of that song. And the credits themselves, with '14.3 Billion Years' playing.that's where I cried. The build up of reaching the Eye, entering, and then that whole trip until the credits. The feeling when you remove the warp core and make your way back to your ship, and 'Final Voyage' starts was almost transcendental. With knowledge as your only upgrade, and knowledge being the window into the past, present and future of the solar system, including those who came before you. I'm astonished that this game exists and that it's been crafted so perfectly to tell its story using its own mechanics. I'm afraid to understand where the story is going in that respect. The rumour log is filling at a much slower rate, and I'm losing momentum, so these light hints are great for motivation.Īlso realised what those flashes of light in distant space are. I guess I'm starting to get hungry for hints now, so I appreciate all the gentle nudges here and there. Seemed to be pointed rock formations and a churning mass of cloud. I managed to do something interesting, whereby I sent the scout into the shuttle, then moved to the 6th location and the scout was suddenly outside, looking at a landscape I didn't recognise. With the quantum shrine, I can get it to the 6th location, but don't know how to proceed from there, with a big chunk of quantum rock blocking the doorway. Also noted the quantum shrine and Nomai shuttle that pop around the place. I found a Nomai corpse, which behaves in a quantum fashion (changing position when I take my eyes off it), but not sure if it's significant. Now I just look for it in my ship, fly towards it and take a picture so it still "exists" even when my vision gets obscured by the clouds. Finally figured out that you don't need the Nomai shuttle to land there.
